Choinneachain Hill

Article text
Kenneth's Cairn
THE cairn atop Choinneachain Hill, high above Loch Turret, was raised to the memory of Kenneth III, King of Scots (also known as Kenneth the Grim).

Many Scottish kings met their end violently and Kenneth was no exception. He was slain at the Battle of Monzievaird in 1005, which took place on the area of ground below where Ochtertyre House now stands.

His cousin Malcolm, believing Kenneth to be a usurper, invaded Strathearn at the head of a substantial army and the bloody battle ensued. With Kenneth and his son Giric both killed in the conflict, Malcolm duly claimed the throne as Malcolm II.
